13 Rarest Items and Blocks in Minecraft

The world of Minecraft is full of different blocks and items that can be obtained in the survival game mode.

While exploring, players will infrequently stumble across items that are hard to get hold of, and may not be craftable. In this list, we discuss the thirteen rarest items and blocks you can obtain in survival mode.

Thirteen rare Minecraft items and blocks

13) Golden apple

Though golden apples are very hard to come across, they are on #13 on this list because they can be crafted quite easily. To craft a golden apple, place eight gold ingots on all the edges of the crafting slots on the crafting table, and put an apple in the center.
It may seem like it requires a lot of gold, but players with an efficient gold farm will have no issues crafting a ton of golden apples. Upon consumption, along with restoring four health points, the golden apple provides the following effects:

  • Absorption I for two minutes.
  • Regeneration II for five seconds.

12) Totem of Undying

If you are a clumsy player who dies a lot in Minecraft because of silly mistakes, try to have a totem of undying always equipped. Because when a player’s health reaches zero with a totem in either one of their hands, they do not die. The totem saves them and gives them these effects:

  • Regeneration II for forty seconds in Bedrock Edition and forty-five seconds in Java Edition.
  • Fire Resistance I for forty seconds.
  • Absorption II for five seconds.

You can acquire totems of undying by killing evokers. They spawn during raids and can be found inside woodland mansions as well.

11) Emerald ore

Minecraft has a number of ores generated naturally both in the Overworld and the Nether dimension. Out of all the ores in the game, emerald ores are the rarest in the Overworld. However, you will get to see this ore a lot more once the Minecraft 1.18 update Caves & Cliffs comes out.
Emerald ores are generated only inside mountains.

10) Heart of the sea

One of the ingredients for crafting the conduit is the heart of the sea. It is an uncraftable item that looks like a blue candy.
Heart of the sea can only be obtained from buried treasures. If you manage to locate a buried treasure, you will always find a heart of the sea inside it.

9) Blaze rods

Blaze rods are one of the essential items if you’re aiming to take down the Ender Dragon.
To enter the end dimension and fight the dragon, you will need the eyes of ender for locating a stronghold and activating the end portal. And one of the ingredients for crafting eye of ender is the blaze rod.
To get blaze rods in Minecraft, you need to defeat blazes. They only spawn in Nether fortresses through spawners.

8) Dragon's Breath

Dragon’s Breath is an item that you will need to brew Lingering potions in Minecraft. Like most things on this list, it is an uncraftable item that can be acquired by scooping up the Ender Dragon’s fireball clouds or breath attacks in a glass bottle.
Apart from brewing Lingering potions, it has no other use in the game.

7) Nether star

Using the Nether star acquired by defeating the wither, you can craft a beacon. It is a unique block that projects light straight in the sky and can grant useful effects to players in its range.
You can gain these status effects from a beacon with a full pyramid: Speed, Jump Boost, Haste, Resistance, Strength, or Regeneration.

6) Beacon

Using the Nether star acquired by defeating the wither, you can craft a beacon. It is a unique block that projects light straight in the sky and can grant useful effects to players in its range.
You can gain these status effects from a beacon with a full pyramid: Speed, Jump Boost, Haste, Resistance, Strength, or Regeneration.

5) Ancient debris

While mining in the Nether, ancient debris is the block you should look for. It is the rarest and one of the most valuable ores in Minecraft. Upon being smelted, it gives netherite scrap, which is required for crafting netherite ingots.

4) End crystal

If you are afraid of dying because of explosions, steer clear of the end crystal. It, as the name suggests, is a crystal that explodes upon sustaining damage.

These explosive crystals can be found on top of the obsidian pillars in the End dimension from where they heal the Ender Dragon. After crafting four end crystals, players can use them to resummon the ender dragon.

3) Elytra

Everyone loves the elytra in Minecraft as it can be used to fly around the world. Flying makes transportation in Minecraft a lot easy and more fun.
However, to fly around using an elytra, you will need rockets as elytras can only be used to glide. Rockets will help you gain momentum for moving forward.
Elytras are uncraftable, and you can get one only by looting an end ship that generates in the end cities.

2) Enchanted golden apple

These are a variant of golden apples that cannot be crafted. You can get one enchanted golden apple from the chests of dungeons, mineshafts, bastions, woodland mansions, ruined portals, and desert temples. Bastion’s chests have the highest chance of having it.

When you eat an enchanted golden apple, you will gain the following effects:

  • Absorption IV for two minutes
  • Regeneration II (level five in Bedrock Edition) for thirty seconds.
  • Fire Resistance I for five minutes.

You cannot mine the dragon egg or collect it by any means without using commands. If the player tries to mine the egg, it will teleport on a nearby block.
