Glass is one of the most common building materials in sandbox survival games, so it is natural for players to wonder how glass works in Hytale. If you are coming from Minecraft, the system may feel familiar at first—but it works very differently in practice.
Here is everything you need to know about glass in Hytale Early Access, including how to get glass-related items and how to make windows for your builds.
Can You Make Glass Blocks in Hytale?
No, traditional glass blocks do not exist in Hytale Early Access.
Unlike Minecraft, where smelting sand gives you placeable glass blocks, Hytale currently does not allow players to craft transparent glass blocks or glass panels for building. However, that does not mean glass has no use in the game.
Hytale still includes a sand-to-glass interaction, but the result is a functional item rather than a building block.
How to Get Glass in Hytale

Step 1: Find Sand
Sand can be found in several locations across the world:
- Desert or Badlands-style biomes
- Shores of lakes, rivers, and oceans
- Large desert regions like the Howling Sands biome
Sand usually appears as lighter-colored terrain near water or across dry, open biomes. In some areas, breaking sand may yield sandstone instead, as sand mechanics are still evolving in Early Access.
Step 2: Smelt Sand in a Furnace

Once you have sand:
- Place the sand into a Furnace
- Add a fuel source such as wood or coal
- Wait for the smelting process to finish
Instead of producing a glass block, the furnace outputs Glass Bottles.
What Are Glass Bottles Used For?
Glass Bottles are utility items, not building materials. They are mainly used for:
- Brewing potions at the Alchemy Table
- Carrying and transporting liquids like water
These bottles cannot be placed in the world as blocks and cannot be used to create windows or decorative glass structures.
How to Make Windows in Hytale
Windows in Hytale do not require glass at all.
Instead, windows are a crafted decorative item that uses wood.
Crafting Windows
- Use a Builder’s Workbench
- Insert any type of wood
- Craft four-panel glass-style windows
One block of wood crafts two windows.
Despite their appearance, these windows are not made from real glass items. They are pre-designed window blocks intended specifically for building.
How to Craft a Builder’s Workbench
If you do not already have one, the Builder’s Workbench is easy to make:
- 6 wood
- 3 stone
You can craft it from the standard crafting workbench under the third crafting tab.
Where to Find Sand in Hytale

Desert and Badlands Biomes
These regions contain the largest amounts of sand and are easy to identify due to their open, yellow terrain. However, some sand blocks may convert into sandstone when mined.
Water Edges and Beaches
Early-game players can reliably find sand along the edges of rivers, lakes, and oceans. These areas are ideal if you have not yet explored deep desert zones.
Howling Sands Biome
The Howling Sands is a named desert region filled with dunes and rocky canyons. It is one of the best locations to gather large quantities of sand and other desert resources.
