How to get Villagers to follow you in Minecraft

Minecraft is known for having a wide variety of creatures, called mobs. Almost every mob has a purpose and helps players in some way. Villagers are among the most iconic mobs in Minecraft.

Besides their hilarious yet annoying ‘hmm’ noises, villagers are famous for their brilliant trades, iron golem spawning ability, and other behavioral features. With the help of villagers, players can make iron golem farms and crop farms and obtain valuable items like enchanted books, diamond gears, ender pearls, etc.

To get all of these benefits, you will first have to find villagers in Minecraft. Villages are the best place to find villagers. But, bringing them to your base can be a real problem. Lucky for you, here is a Minecraft guide that will help you move villagers easily.

Minecraft: How to make a villager follow you

Minecraft villager

In Minecraft, most mobs are attracted to one or more things. For example, cows love wheat, phantoms always attack insomniac players, and so on. Similarly, villagers are also allured by specific things in Minecraft.

Villagers are one of the smartest mobs in Minecraft. They can trade, sleep, run away from danger, and call for protection. You can easily get a villager to follow you in Minecraft using their AI.

In Minecraft, there are two types of villagers: employed and unemployed. The method to make them follow you depends on their type.

How to make an unemployed villager follow you [Using workstation blocks]

Unless they are nitwits, unemployed villagers are always looking for workstations. When a villager locates a workstation block, it quickly walks towards the blocks and takes a profession. You can use this behavior to lure a villager to any desired location. Do these steps to make an unemployed villager follow you:

  1. Craft a workstation block
  2. Place a workstation block near the villager.
  3. Wait for the villager to arrive at its new workstation.
  4. Break the workstation block and place it in the direction you want to go. The villager will walk towards the workstation block again.
  5. Keep repeating the steps until the villager is at the place you want it to be.

You can place a workstation block in a room and let the unemployed villager enter the room. Once it is inside, block the entrance.

Players can use any of the following blocks to lure villagers:

  • Barrel
  • Blast furnace
  • Brewing stand
  • Cartography table
  • Cauldron
  • Composter
  • Fletching table
  • Grindstone
  • Lectern
  • Loom
  • Smithing table
  • Smoker
  • Stonecutter

Using these blocks, you can attract unemployed villagers in Minecraft. But, what if the villager is employed? Players can remove their job status by breaking their workstation block. However, this works only with villagers who have not made a single trade. If you have already traded items from a villager, you cannot remove its profession.

How to make any villager follow you [Using bed]

Both employed and unemployed villagers prefer to sleep during the night in Minecraft. When the sun sets down, villagers start looking for beds. Just like workstation blocks, beds can also be used for luring villagers.

You can craft a bed using three wool blocks and three planks on a crafting table. Follow these steps to make any villager follow you in Minecraft.

  1. Wait for the time to turn night.
  2. Destroy any existing bed the villager can use to sleep.
  3. Place a bed close to the villager, and towards the location you want it to go.
  4. Break the bed and repeat the steps to keep the villager moving.

It works for both types of villagers. The only downside is that this method works only during the nighttime.

Using boats and minecarts is better than making villagers follow you. But if players want to move them to a nearby location, workstations and beds are a cheap way to transport villagers.
