Villagers are one of the smartest mobs in Minecraft. They can trade, sleep, run away from danger, and call for protection. You can easily get a villager to follow you in Minecraft using their AI.
In Minecraft, there are two types of villagers: employed and unemployed. The method to make them follow you depends on their type.
How to make an unemployed villager follow you [Using workstation blocks]
Unless they are nitwits, unemployed villagers are always looking for workstations. When a villager locates a workstation block, it quickly walks towards the blocks and takes a profession. You can use this behavior to lure a villager to any desired location. Do these steps to make an unemployed villager follow you:
- Craft a workstation block
- Place a workstation block near the villager.
- Wait for the villager to arrive at its new workstation.
- Break the workstation block and place it in the direction you want to go. The villager will walk towards the workstation block again.
- Keep repeating the steps until the villager is at the place you want it to be.
You can place a workstation block in a room and let the unemployed villager enter the room. Once it is inside, block the entrance.

Both employed and unemployed villagers prefer to sleep during the night in Minecraft. When the sun sets down, villagers start looking for beds. Just like workstation blocks, beds can also be used for luring villagers.
You can craft a bed using three wool blocks and three planks on a crafting table. Follow these steps to make any villager follow you in Minecraft.
- Wait for the time to turn night.
- Destroy any existing bed the villager can use to sleep.
- Place a bed close to the villager, and towards the location you want it to go.
- Break the bed and repeat the steps to keep the villager moving.
It works for both types of villagers. The only downside is that this method works only during the nighttime.
Using boats and minecarts is better than making villagers follow you. But if players want to move them to a nearby location, workstations and beds are a cheap way to transport villagers.
